Charlottetown is located in the Appalachian Mountain
region. Which includes most of the Eastern coast provinces and a little bit of
Eastern Quebec. The landscape is rolling hills, which are reminiscent of the
grand mountains that were once in the area. The vegetation is mostly moist
forests of a mix between coniferous and deciduous trees. Though it is hilly,
most of the area around Charlottetown is farmland.
All of
PEI is built upon soft red sandstone, which is responsible for their rich red
soil. The soil is fine, sand like and well drained, which is perfect for the
farming they do on the island. Mostly potatoes and vegetables like it. The soil
is literally named ‘The Charlottetown Soil’ and is even used in multiple shirt
dyes that are sold to the tourists that visit the island and city.
PEI is
in the Atlantic Maritime Ecozone, the smallest Ecozone in Canada. The other provinces
in this zone are New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and a small portion of Quebec.
